To meet this specific need, you need a gas fireplace equipped with one of two systems available on the market that allow for ignition without requiring an external power source: the millivolt system or the IPI system. Regardless of the system type, whether millivolt or IPI, it will initiate the operation of your fireplace. In the event of a power outage, the millivolt system will continue to function normally. The IPI system, however, will operate as intended only if the fireplace is equipped with backup batteries.
Each system has its advantages and disadvantages. The millivolt system is a proven, reliable, and straightforward technology for igniting the fireplace. Keeping a pilot light on continuously offers several benefits, but is it a waste? There are arguments in favor of a permanent pilot light. In cold or humid climates, a small amount of heat generated by a continuous pilot can prevent rust and cobwebs from forming inside the fireplace burners, thus avoiding service calls for repairs.
On the other hand, an IPI system can be considered more "efficient," as gas is only used when you activate a wall switch or remote control. However, it is a more complex ignition system requiring a power source to create a spark and ignite the pilot light. In the event of a power outage, the fireplace will not light, but most gas fireplaces equipped with an IPI system come with a battery backup module to address this issue. Just ensure that the batteries in your module are always functional!
Simple and effective annual maintenance can help you avoid many issues. For a modern wood burning stove or fireplace, follow these tips:
- Ensure that the air ducts and fans are clean and free from obstructions.
- Check that the door seal is in good condition.
- Regularly clean the cool glass with a damp cloth or a specific cleaner for fireplace glass.
- Schedule an annual chimney sweeping and inspection by a qualified professional, and consider more frequent service if your wood stove is used daily in winter.
For a gas fireplace or stove:
- Use a vacuum to remove dust from the exterior of the unit.
- Regularly clean the cool glass with a damp cloth or a specific cleaner for fireplace glass.
- Call on our professionals for a complete annual inspection.
- In summer, remove the batteries from the remote to prevent leaks and electronic damage.
For side or direct vent fireplaces, ensure that the exterior vent is clear of obstructions (bird nests, fallen leaves, etc.).
Our team transforms old wood fireplaces into energy-efficient gas inserts every year. This process is a practical and wise investment.
A gas insert that is convenient and easy to use can be installed in a masonry fireplace. A gas insert (natural gas or propane) is designed to fit into an existing wood fireplace. There are various sizes of inserts available, depending on the width, height, and depth of your existing fireplace.
An electrical and gas supply line will need to be installed inside the masonry to conceal it. Often, this can be done from the basement, through the clean-out cavity, and by removing the small ash dump door located at the back of the old fireplace.
Contact our specialists at Boutique Chaleur to find out if your old fireplace can be converted, thanks to the many choices of gas inserts we offer.
It all depends! Like natural gas, propane is a cleaner fuel than charcoal and is easier to control. For beginner cooks, it’s generally easier to start with a gas or propane barbecue. While a natural gas barbecue grill requires a more expensive permanent installation, it requires less maintenance than a propane tank.
Coal BBQs, on the other hand, offer a pleasant, authentic smoky flavor. Although cooking is a bit slower and more sensitive, charcoal and wood chips provide a wide variety of flavors and are perfect for those who enjoy the traditional barbecue experience.
Your final choice will mainly be influenced by your taste preferences, ease of use, budget, and how often you plan to use your barbecue. Come meet our specialists at Boutique Chaleur so they can help you choose the right product for your needs.
The amount of BTUs does not necessarily determine the power of a barbecue. It’s the design and components that influence the barbecue's performance, not just the BTU count. It’s essential to focus on the sturdiness of the construction, ensure that the burner effectively covers the cooking surface, and consider your specific needs in terms of surface area and usage. Every cook has unique requirements. Come meet our specialists at Boutique Chaleur for advice on the barbecue and outdoor kitchen that will best suit your needs.
